With the industrial might of America in full wartime production, the need for raw materials was critical. Aircraft, tanks, weapons, clothing, paper, and thousands of other items needed for the war effort created shortages and rationing for the public with the materials used for these items. Americans were asked to give up their spare items they wouldn't need and use less or produce their own if possible in order to free up supply. Nylon material was used, for example, for things like the bungee cord attaching a glider to a C-47 transport plane. Metals, rubber, copper, steel, and everything in between was used to keep the tools needed to win the war in the solider's hands!
